| THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW |
| |
| Before hiring a design studio to create your website, logo, signage, promotional materials, or write your content, read these tips below. They might just save you money and help get the right design studio working for you. |
| |
| 1.
Research. Understand the message you want conveyed to your audience. If you don’t know what that is, find out. Do some research on your competition and gauge where you stand in the marketplace. This is critical need-to-know information. Finding this out for yourself means you won’t have to pay someone else to find out for you. |
| |
| 2. What to do, what to ask when considering a design studio. Things to look for while visiting design studio websites and some questions you should ask that will help you decide which firm is right for you. |
 |
a) View their portfolio. Is their portfolio available online? If it is, carefully review their work. Does their work appeal to you? Have they created websites that have a look and feel you envision for your website? If they don’t have a readily available portfolio, ask for it. |
 |
| |
b) Compare Prices. Once you’ve narrowed your search, ask for detailed quotes from each prospective company. Make sure the quotes tell you exactly what you’re getting for what you’re paying. Quotes are always free. If a company wants to charge for a quote, put on your coat and “charge” for the door! |
| |
Remember this wise pricing maxim when making your choice: |
| |
Good and fast, is not cheap. Fast and cheap, is not good. Good and cheap, is not fast. |
 |
| |
c) Question their design Process. How does their design process work? What will they need from you? What are their timelines to complete the project? What kind of payment do they require to begin the process? If they ask for payment in full before beginning, that’s another great reason to grab your coat, rip up their quote, and run for the door! |
|
| |
| 3. How much does good design cost? Costs vary depending on your requirements. A basic logo costs less than developing a full brand. The same goes for website design. As an example, the cost should be reasonably low for a small brochure site that provides information only about your company and services. On the other hand, if your site needs greater functionality, the price will rise. Also keep in mind other possible costs such as the purchasing of stock images, creative graphics (logo), web hosting, domain name registration and ongoing web maintenance. |
| |
| 4.
What is the difference between a custom design and a template? When you pay for a custom design you are receiving a unique design, something that is designed to fit your exact needs and suit your image. A template design is a purchased design that can be resold to anyone, not just you. |
| |
| 5. Things to know about domains. Make sure you own your domain and the design company you hire registers it to you. A domain (.com/.ca) should not cost you more than $25 per year. |
